World We Imagine Part 1

I think that for me to make the world better place, I need to be in a position where I have the capability to do so. I think that much of the world is defined by the decisions of business leaders and those with capital to allocate and I think that the first step to me working on being able to improve the world is to be a business leader or someone in a position where I can make a difference. Biotech and healthcare innovation is something that is really important to me and so I want to be able to invest in things like cancer, longevity, and neuroscience research. I want to be able to leverage my business skills to impact the world in areas I care about and so I think the first step is to build my business skills and become a leader.

The University Village opened in 2017 as part of a plan to upgrade the community surrounding USC. Rick Caruso, a USC trustee, said that "It makes it a much more vibrant neighborhood." The project cost $700M and is made up of 1.2 million sq. ft. on 15 acres of land. Landmark tenants include Target and Trader Joe's with student housing on top. USC built the Village where the University Park shopping center was prior to its demolishment in 2014. USC had acquired the shopping center in 1999. The University Village also includes student housing in top of retail space. The retail space includes multiple food establishments such as Dulce, Cava, and Insomnia Cookies as well as Starbucks. Other stores include Lululemon. The Village also has a gym and a student dining hall. The Village is a major aspect of USC's pitch to students on the unique lifestyle offered by the University. Few other universities include similar amenities. The project was also a priority of then President...

Book 2 Post 2

I chose the book The Wayfinders  by Wade Davis for my second book. In my first post, I wrote about how Davis structured his book in a way that is intriguing t o readers. I pointed out the Mahatma Gandhi quote that started chapter 1 and some chapter titles like   "Season of the Brown Hyena" and "Century of the Wind" as examples of book structure that made it interesting. As I read further, I found another interesting quote: " “In the West, time is like gold. You save it, you  lose it, you waste it, or you don’t have enough of it. In the Barasana  language there is no word for time.” In The Wayfinders , Wade Davis wants to highlight how different cultures around the world approach life differently. I found this quote profound because it tied to something I saw recently that is an entirely new addition to this context: AI. I recently saw a ChatGPT response to a command about creating a new language that highlighted a certain fictional language where there was no c...

Book 2 Post 1

For my second book, I chose The Wayfinders  by Wade Davis. I thought that Wade Davis' background as an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society was interesting and led me to take a look at the book. The first page starts with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: "I want all the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any." Davis uses that as starting point to delve deeper into what traveling provides as lessons about other cultures and how that can apply to individuals throughout the world. I enjoy travel a lot and so I think some of his thoughts on absorbing other cultures are insightful. I found it interesting how Davis starts each chapter with a quote from someone else about the topic he wants to cover and then explores it in detail. Many of the people he quotes are well-known, adding to the intrigue. The names of his chapters, such as "Season of the Brown Hyena" and "Century...

Anima Mundi Investment Proposal

From: Atul Ajoy To: Professor Clark Hansen, CEO, AMDP Subject: Investment Recommendation Memo - Culdesac February 28th, 2023 In a detailed search for businesses that fit the criteria and standards of AMDP's investments, I found Culdesac, a startup with an innovative approach to urban planning and real estate development, to be an interesting opportunity. AMDP Standards: Triple Bottom Line - The triple bottom line is a framework for businesses to be measured on their "social, environment, and economic impact". The concept was coined by author John Elkington around 30 years ago to ensure that a business' success was measured not only through profit and loss but also "in terms of the wellbeing of billions of people and the health of our planet" (Elkington). Corporate Social Responsibility -  Corporate social responsibility is the aspect of a company's governance that it puts in place to make sure that it is beneficial to society (Peterdy). There are 4 main ...

Much progress has been made in the development of artificial intelligence recently. One organization, OpenAPI, has led the charge and launched ChatGPT, a chatbot built on a generative language model. OpenAI is a non-profit artificial intelligence research organization founded by former Y Combinator President Sam Altman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and others with $1B pledged to the project. It's for-profit subsidiary was valued at $29B and struck a deal with Microsoft for a rumored $10B. The deal reportedly means that Microsoft would get 75% of OpenAI's profits until it recoups its $10B and then a 49% stake in OpenAI. In November 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT built on top of GPT-3. GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3) is an autoregressive language model that can take an initial prompt and continue to write based off of the prompt. ChatGPT is built to act like a conversationalist but can do a variety of other things such as writing computer cod...
